You will require a vehicle to meet me at these trailheads.
Stanley Glacier can be found in the lesser-known Kootenay National Park, British Columbia, only a short 30-minute drive from the town of Banff.
We begin our adventure by crossing a stream and climbing long, gentle switchbacks through a regenerating forest. A wildfire hit the Kootenay area in 1968, so unlike its neighbors in Banff and Yoho, the forest surrounding the Stanley Glacier hike today is far from dense. The new growth allows plenty of opportunities to stop and admire mountain views along the trail with very few obstructions. Remember to pause and look over your shoulder as you gradually climb above the picturesque Kootenay Valley below.
Before long, we enter an ancient boulder field left by the glacier above. Keep your eyes out for fossils hiding within the shale.
Elevation: 607 meters of gradual elevation gain.
Terrain: The trail is hard-packed with many roots and rocks, which can be slippery when wet. As we reach the glacier, the terrain turns into boulders and scree. Appropriate footwear is necessary, and poles can make this part easier to maneuver.
A comprehensive packing list will be sent prior to your hike.
Absolutely!
Children should be able to walk comfortably on their own for the duration and length of the hike. We will have plenty of engaging rest stops to keep hikers of all ages motivated.
Parents with little ones in child carriers. You must be comfortable carrying your children across rocky and sometimes slippery terrain and on trails with elevation gain.
Please contact me to discuss if this trail is right for your family.
